Psychosocial disability, invisible disability, and what links them.
What it does not cover yet
Rights: they differ from one country to the next, and nothing here approximates them.

What the word disability adds

A psychological difficulty is not a disability. It becomes one when it lasts and weighs on ordinary life: holding a job, following a course of training, keeping relationships.

Disability is therefore not in the person. It lies in the gap between what they can do on a given day and what their surroundings demand of them every day, without giving way.

What the word covers

Psychosocial disability

The lasting effect of a difficulty on ordinary life. Three features come back.

  • It fluctuates

Days when everything gets done, days when nothing does, with nothing having changed.

  • It does not touch intelligence

The abilities are there. What is missing at times is the impetus, the concentration or the confidence.

  • It tires outside the task

A meeting, a journey, a call to make can cost a whole day.

Why is “he managed yesterday” not an argument?

The variation is read as unwillingness, and it is one of the costliest misunderstandings. It comes undone with a few sentences, provided you have them to hand.

What the variation is not

  • Unwillingness: the person has not changed between the two days.
  • A lack of ability: the abilities are there, and they come back.
  • An effort you would only have to double: the cost is paid afterwards, not during.

What helps, on the other side

  • Judging over time rather than on a single day.
  • Letting an adjustment be asked for without having to justify it every time.
  • Counting recovery time as time spent on the task.

What nothing signals

Invisible disability

Nothing about it shows — that is the case for most psychosocial disabilities.

  • You have to convince

Explaining, justifying, sometimes proving. To everyone you deal with, and every single time.

  • Saying nothing ends up costing more

Many compensate in silence. That holds for a while, then it costs more than it spares.

Should you say it, and to whom?

It is the most frequent question, and it has no single answer. What follows is not advice: it is both sides of the scale, laid out flat.

What saying it can bring

  • An end to the burden of convincing the same person over and over.
  • An adjustment that no longer has to be asked for apologetically.
  • Bad days that stop being read as a lack of commitment.

What saying it can cost

  • The fear is often well founded: a job, a position, a bond can suffer for it.
  • What is said once cannot be unsaid, and does not stay with the person you said it to.
  • Having to start the explanation again the moment someone new arrives.

Those close to them

What those close to them live through

Someone close sees what others do not, and is believed by no one.

  • Helping is not taking charge

  • Someone close who wears out protects no one

  • There are places to say it

What if I am the one who is close?

Someone close carries the organising, the paperwork, the bad days, and often does it without anyone naming what they do. Three things are worth saying.

What is not expected of you

  • Holding the role of a support professional: helping is not taking charge.
  • Having an answer to the bad days. There is none, and staying there is already one.
  • Holding on without limit. Someone close who wears themselves out protects no one.

What exists for you

  • Workshops and talk circles, where you speak without having to explain the situation from the start.
  • Your own tiredness, which deserves the same attention as the person you walk beside.
